The first handcuffs can be traced back to the
legend involving mythical God Proteus. He was considered to be the most
knowledgeable person in the world during the time. But, his selfish attitude of
not sharing his knowledge with others forced Aristaeus to bind him in handcuffs.
He thought he would part with his knowledge that way.
In the 4th century B.C.,
Carthaginians were also recorded in the history books to be carrying handcuffs
with them so as to conquer Greeks.
In the 15th and 16th
centuries, words such as shack bold and swivel manacle found
mention in place of handcuffs in history books.
Modern History
It was in the year 1862 that W.V.Adams invented
a design that had ratchets. Few years
later, in the year 1865, John Tower used the same design and established some
of the most successful handcuff making companies until World War II.
Since then the basic handcuff design has seen
many alterations.
